Bill e Charlie, conosciuti come i Monroe Brothers, suonano e compongono moltissimo materiale ormai considerato parte integrante del repertorio classico del bluegrass e della old time music, come Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms e My Saviour's Train.

Bill battezzerà la nuova formazione Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys, in onore del Blue Grass State of Kentucky, sua terra natale.

In questo periodo, furono incise registrazioni leggendarie come I'm Going Back To Old Kentucky, Why Did You Wander ed il poderoso strumentale Blue Grass Breakdown.
