Natalia Cappuccini (born Natalia Noemi Keery-Fisher; 15 August 1986),[1][2][3] stage name Natalia Kills, is an English singer, songwriter, actress and director. She released her debut album, Perfectionist, in 2011, and her second album, Trouble, in September 2013.[4]

Biography

Early life

Kills was born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, to a British father of Afro-Jamaican heritage and a Uruguayan mother,[5] and attended Bradford Girls' Grammar School. Her family, then affluent, left Bradford when Kills was a child, moving from country to country, and her early years were spent between England, Jamaica, and Spain.[6] Kills' father was arrested and imprisoned in 1999 on undisclosed charges, and her family, subsequently impoverished, moved to London.[7] Acting professionally since the age of nine, Kills continued her education at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, where she studied classical drama. With a difficult home life, Kills ran away when she was 14, and shifted her focus away from acting. [1] [8][9] "The minute I moved out when I was 14 and I ran away from home, I decided I could be whoever I wanted to be, and that I could be myself and I didn't want to be an actress anymore," Kills said in a 2013 interview with Stuff Magazine.[10][11]

Kills has described her teenage years as "degenerate," stating that she tried to set her ex-boyfriend's house on fire while both were in it. Kills had frequent legal trouble and periodically experienced suicidal depression.[12][8] She was also briefly involved with a religious cult. [13]

1995-2010: Career beginnings

Kills made her acting debut at age 9 in 1995 in New Voices. She had a regular role as Sima on the TV sitcom All About Me and also played Amy Franks in the BBC's long-running radio drama The Archers. She began writing songs at 14,[14] some of which were featured in films and television shows, including Bring It On 4, Sleepover, Just My Luck, and Entourage.[2] After finishing with The Archers in 2003, Kills began pursuing a music career and had a significant breakthrough as "Candy Rapper" in 2003, when she won a BBC Radio 1 MC Battle in Leeds.[1] She signed to the UK record company Adventures in Music and released her first single "Don't Play Nice" under the name Verbalicious in February 2005. Kills told W that her childhood nickname from her mother was "Verbal" because she talked and sang a lot. She adopted the name and variations of it as her stage name at some points during her career.[15]

In 2007, while writing music for films,[16] Kills posted Wommanequin, a demo she produced and wrote, to MySpace. The song received 2 million plays on the website, and Kills reached the top of the unsigned artists chart.[15] With offers coming in for concerts and festivals, Kills traveled to Los Angeles,[16] where she met with record labels and producers including Akon and Justin Timberlake.[17][18] A DJ introduced her to will.i.am after hearing her demo and learning that she did not have a record deal. In January 2009, will.i.am signed her to his record label, will.i.am Music Group.[16]"We had a really good creative chemistry," she said in a 2011 Billboard interview.[19] During this time she (under the name Verse) also co-wrote and appeared on "They Talk Shit About Me" by French recording artist M. Pokora and met underground director Guillaume Doubet, who would go on to direct many of her videos, in Paris.

Kills moved to Los Angeles in 2008. Arriving without money or a place to live, Kills "lived out of these motels, bumming around, trying to work with or make songs with anyone who would have me for a couple of hours in the studio. I was a degenerate. I was terrible. I did awful things. I was just trying to survive and I was too young to know better."[20]

201012: Perfectionist

Kills adopted the stage name Natalia Kills reportedly after her record company advised her that her legal name, "Natalia Cappuccini" (her grandmother's surname)[21] was "indescribable."[16] She explained in an interview that she chose "Kills" from the interjection "you killed it!," representing her tendency to be a perfectionist.[22]

Kills released her debut album Perfectionist in Germany in April 2011 following the release of her first single, "Mirrors," which hit the German Top 10. The album was described as a concept album by Kills, who claimed everybody is a perfectionist.[14] It featured production by Jeff Bhasker and Fernando Garibay,[14] who had worked with Lady Gaga.[23] The album was accompanied by four singles, "Mirrors," "Wonderland," "Free" and "Kill My Boyfriend." The first three singles were minor hits in several European countries but failed to chart in the US or UK. Kills opened for Kelis's European All Hearts Tour, and supported Robyn on her Body Talk Tour in November 2010 and early 2011. She also supported Kesha on the UK leg of her Get Sleazy Tour. Kills additionally opened eight shows for Katy Perry during her California Dreams Tour in Europe[24] and São Paulo, Brazil. She also opened for the Black Eyed Peas over the summer of 2011 in Europe.[15][22] Two tracks from Perfectionist, Free feat. will.i.am, and Mirrors, went Top 10 in Europe and achieved sales of over 750,000.[11][25]

Kills was featured on LMFAO's 2011 single, "Champagne Showers," as well as on Junior Caldera's single "Lights Out (Go Crazy)" with Far East Movement. It was released on 13 March 2012.[26] Kills also features in Tatana's single, "You Can't Get in My Head (If You Can't Get in My Bed)." "Zombie", was used in an episode of Face Off.

2012present: Trouble

On 14 September, 2012, Kills unveiled the video for "Controversy" to start promotion of her second studio album, Trouble, which was released on 3 September 2013, through will.i.am/Cherrytree/Interscope Records. Recorded in Los Angeles and New York,[6] Trouble was written and recorded in collaboration with Jeff Bhasker and Emile Haynie, who has worked with Lana Del Rey, Kid Cudi, and Eminem, among others.[27] Centered around her troubled childhood, the album received positive critical attention, with Idolator writing "Kills has grown as a songwriter, now mining her experiences (in particular, her tortured past) with a richness and authenticity."[28] The video for the track "Problem," the album's first single, was released in June, 2013; in it, Kills reenacts her first few years in Hollywood. Kills co-directed the clip, which features model Adonis Bosso.[29] "Saturday Night" was the album's second single. Exploring themes of domestic abuse and drug addiction, as well as Kills' relationship with her parents, the video for the track was directed by Guillaume Doubet.[30][31]

Although only 5'2", Kills is also a model. She is frequently photographed for fashion magazines, and has received global media attention related to her clothing and style.[32][33][34] [9] [8]
