Jack Rothstein (15 December 1925 - 16 November 2001)[1] was a Polish-born violinist and conductor, living most of his life in England.[2]

Biography

Background

Rothstein was born in Warsaw, Poland, and moved to Israel with his family at the age of two. Later on, he was sent to live with his aunt in Cairo, Egypt, and attended a French school.[2] During this time, he also started his music studies.[3]

During World War II, Rothstein was invited to join the British Army as a musician, playing for the troops all over the Middle and Far East. He then arrived in Great Britain and made London his home in 1946.[1][3] Rothstein was married with Linn Hendry.[4]

Education

After settling down in England, Rothstein continued his music studies at the Guildhall School of Music in the early 1950s.[3] He also took part in master classes by Sascha Lasserson and Leonid Kogan as well as Felix van Dyl and Henryk Szeryng, former pupils of Carl Flesch.[2][3] In the 1954 Carl Flesch Competition, Rothstein won the second prize.[3]

Career

Rothstein worked as the co-leader of the Yehudi Menuhin's Bath Festival Orchestra, the Boyd Neel Orchestra, and the Northern Sinfonia. He was also the leader of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. As a conductor, Rothstein toured extensively with the Johann Strauss Orchestra and his own ensemble the Viennese Orchestra of London. For over 20 years, Rothstein was also a member of the London Czech Trio, in addition to other music ensembles, performing among others at The Dorchester Hotel and for the BBC.[1][3]

Throughout his professional career, Rothstein also performed as a soloist, playing most of the well-known violin concertos with leading orchestras and giving solo recitals,[2] appearing at the Royal Festival Hall and the Barbican Hall on various occasions.[3]

In addition to his classical music career, Rothstein recorded many background tracks for film and television,[2] including such British TV series as Birds of a Feather, The House of Elliot, Last of the Summer Wine, and Soldier, Soldier.[3] He also played the violin in The Beatles songs "I Am the Walrus" and "Within You Without You".

In addition, Rothstein also worked as a teacher, coaching aspiring violinists and chamber music groups in England, Canada, Spain, and Switzerland.[3]

Discography

Rothstein's recordings include the Tchaikovsky Piano Trio, the Nielsen, Grieg and Sibelius Quartets, the Schubert Quintet, and five CD's of Viennese classicism. The Music Trade Association twice awarded him prizes for "Orchestral Record of the Year".[3]
